Conference Strands

The conference will feature two main strands:
(i) Enhancing the professional practice of teachers
(ii) Teachers as learners, teachers as leaders

(i) Enhancing the professional practice of teachers
This strand calls for teachers to take ownership of their professional development and harness their pedagogical knowledge and skills in drawing out the best learning in their students. The conference reminds teachers of the importance of being reflective practitioners and the need to enhance their own professional practice. During the conference, teachers will be given opportunities to reflect on their own learning and teaching practices as they develop their professional capacity in the following three areas of expertise

(a) Diverse pedagogies: Teachers will learn how different pedagogies can be used to facilitate the different types of learning such as inquiry-based learning , experiential learning, learning by doing and interacting. Teachers will also learn how differentiated instruction is practised by other teachers. These diverse pedagogies will enable our students to find deeper meaning in their learning as well as meet their different learning needs and learning styles.

Inquiry-based learning promotes students’ learning by asking questions of themselves and one another and the focus is on the process rather than simply finding the right answer.

Experiential learning requires teachers to contextualise and situate the learning content and process in real world experiences so that students appreciate the purpose of their learning and see the connection between what they learn in school and what they experience in the real world.

Learning by doing provides students opportunities to observe and explore real-life tools through hands-on and experiential learning.

Learning by interacting enables students to learn through collaborating and interacting as a team and this helps our students to develop skills of evaluation and persuasion.

(b) Assessment: Teachers will learn about the different assessment practices and tools used by other teachers. The focus will be on the use of alternative assessment modes (e-assessments, performances, oral presentations, portfolios and projects) beyond the pen-and-paper test.

(c) School-based curriculum: Teachers will learn from other teachers how they design school-based curriculum to facilitate students’ development of skills and attitudes apart from the acquisition of content knowledge. The learning will challenge teachers to take ownership in designing and delivering their own school-based curriculum.

(ii) Teachers as learners, teachers as leaders
The second strand emphasizes the ethos of shared responsibility in the professional practice of teachers. The conference presents opportunities for teachers to lead other teachers in driving more effective and engaged learning in the school experience of our students. Success stories of these teachers will inspire other teachers to pursue excellence in their own practice as well as bring about a greater awareness of this shared responsibility.
